Sony’s PlayStation 4 was again the best-selling console in the US a few weeks ago, although year up to now hardware spending was mainly driven by Microsoft’s Xbox One.
While the PS4 was the best-selling console recently, the Nintendo Switch 32GB with blue and red Joycon controllers was the best-selling hardware (SKU) in March and 2018. Console sales are down as compared with March 2017, but accessories sales grew.
“Both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One achieved accessories sales increase of much more than Forty percent within the month of March as well as year up to now 2018,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella told VentureBeat. “The headsets/headphones segment is driving accessories growth across both platforms, likely driven via the surge in rise in popularity of multiplayer games for example Fortnite from Epic Games.”
On it side, Ubisoft’s new Long way away installment, Far Cry 5, was the top-selling game last month and have become the fastest-selling title within the franchise. The title launched on March 27, and generated $310 million in the first week. “Far Cry 5 debuts because top-selling title of March 2018 and instantly becomes the best-selling title of 2018,” Piscatella said. “Far Cry 5 set a completely new launch month sales record for any Long way away franchise, with consumer spending on full-game sales nearly doubling that of previous franchise best, Far Cry 3. Publisher Ubisoft could be the leading publisher within March and 2018 year so far (January through March).”
Far Cry 5 wasn’t the one new game that did well a few weeks ago C Rare’s Sea of Thieves was another best-selling title of a few weeks ago although having launched only on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC.
“Sea of Thieves was another best-selling game of March, as well as being the eighth best-selling bet on 2018 year to this point,” said Piscatella. “Sea of Thieves generated the best launch month sales for virtually any title maded by developer Rare since tracking by The NPD Group began in 1995.”
